DIY vs pre-built: the honest math
Building your own stack from individual ingredients costs 3-5x less than pre-built blends, with full dose control. The Cognitive Stack Focus Protocol (L-Theanine 200mg + Caffeine 100mg + Alpha-GPC 300mg) costs about $0.50/day from Nootropics Depot. Mind Lab Pro costs $2.30/day. Alpha Brain costs $1.78/day.
Pre-built nootropic stacks ranked
#2: Onnit Alpha Brain ($79.95/45 servings, $1.78/day as of October 2026)
The most famous nootropic, popularized by Joe Rogan. One of very few with a published RCT on the finished product, significant improvements in delayed verbal recall and executive function over 6 weeks in 63 adults aged 18 to 35 (Solomon et al., 2016, with an Onnit co-author). However, uses proprietary blends hiding individual doses. Contains Alpha-GPC, Bacopa, L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine, Phosphatidylserine, and Huperzine A. Score: 7.0/10.
Safety: Huperzine A blocks the same enzyme as the dementia drugs donepezil, galantamine and rivastigmine, so do not combine Alpha Brain with them, and it may slow the heart rate in people on beta blockers or calcium channel blockers (Memorial Sloan Kettering).
#3: NooCube Brain Productivity ($64.99/30 servings, $2.17/day as of October 2026)
Bacopa 250mg, L-Theanine 100mg, L-Tyrosine 250mg, choline 250mg (as VitaCholine). Transparent dosing on most ingredients. No published study on finished product. Solid middle ground. Score: 7.2/10.
Best individual nootropic supplements
L-Theanine + Caffeine, Nootropics Depot ($13.99 and $0.12/day when we last checked in March 2026; now sold in 60 and 180 counts, from $19.99)
100mg caffeine + 200mg L-theanine per capsule. The most evidence-backed nootropic combination. Acute focus within 30 minutes. Each capsule is 100mg of caffeine: for most healthy adults the FDA cites 400mg a day from all sources as an amount not generally associated with negative effects, so count your coffee before adding a capsule. Evidence: 9.0 · Value: 9.8
Bacopa Monnieri 24%, Nootropics Depot ($24.99/120 tablets, $0.21/day as of October 2026)
300mg tablets, standardized to 24% bacosides by UPLC (the 45% capsule we ranked in March 2026 is no longer listed). Strongest evidence-backed herbal nootropic for memory: across 12-week trials it improved 9 of 17 memory free recall tests (Pase et al., 2012). Requires 8-12 weeks. Take it with food: in a 12-week trial of 300mg a day, Bacopa caused more increased stool frequency, abdominal cramps and nausea than placebo (Morgan and Stevens, 2010). Evidence: 8.5 · Value: 9.5
Citicoline (Cognizin), Jarrow Formulas ($18.95/120 caps and $0.16/day when we last checked in March 2026; Jarrow's list price is now $57.99 for 120)
250mg Cognizin CDP-Choline. Supports acetylcholine production. Evidence: 8.0 · Value: 9.0
Lion's Mane, Real Mushrooms ($34.95/120 caps, $0.58/day as of October 2026)
1,000mg of hot water extracted fruiting body per 2-capsule serving, with more than 30% beta-glucans. Its compounds stimulate NGF in laboratory studies; in people, the one trial that measured it saw circulating pro-BDNF rise while mature BDNF did not change (Vigna et al., 2019). See our Lion's Mane deep dive. Evidence: 7.5 · Value: 8.5
Cost comparison
| Option | Daily | Monthly | Dose control |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY starter (Theanine + Caffeine + Bacopa) | $0.33 | $9.90 | Full |
| DIY Focus Stack (with Alpha-GPC) | $0.50 | $15.00 | Full |
| DIY Full Cognitive | $1.31 | $39.30 | Full |
| Alpha Brain | $1.78 | $53.30 | None (proprietary) |
| Mind Lab Pro | $2.30 | $69.00 | Transparent |
DIY figures use the capsule prices we built the stack with in March 2026. As of October 2026 Nootropics Depot's caffeine and L-theanine capsule lists at $19.99 for 60 ($0.33 a dose), so the DIY starter now runs about $0.54 a day; Mind Lab Pro is $2.07 a day on a monthly subscription and $1.72 a day on its 4-month plan. Building your own still wins by roughly 3x to 4x.
Brand-focused pre-built stacks worth knowing
Onnit Alpha Brain is the most-recognized brand-driven nootropic stack on the market, anchored by the Joe Rogan endorsement and decades of brand-building in the broader human-optimization category. The current formulation pairs Bacopa monnieri, Huperzine A, Alpha GPC, L-Theanine and L-Tyrosine with L-Leucine, pterostilbene and vitamin B6. Two randomized controlled trials (small sample, sponsor-funded) have been published on Alpha Brain: in 63 young adults, six weeks improved delayed verbal recall and executive function versus placebo (Solomon et al., 2016), while in 43 soldiers a month of it did not improve rifle marksmanship (Barringer et al., 2018). Pricing runs $79.95 for a 90-capsule bottle that lasts 45 days ($1.78/day), or $57.95 for 30 days ($1.93/day), as of October 2026, a little below Mind Lab Pro. The tradeoff vs Mind Lab Pro: stronger brand recognition and a longer track record in the consumer market, slightly less aggressive on individual-compound dosing transparency. For users who want a brand-name pre-built stack rather than building DIY, Onnit Alpha Brain is the most established alternative to Mind Lab Pro.
Safety before you stack
Each pick above carries its caution beside it: Huperzine A in Alpha Brain (do not combine with dementia drugs such as donepezil; Memorial Sloan Kettering), Rhodiola in Mind Lab Pro (reported losartan interaction, possibly safe for up to 12 weeks; NCCIH), Bacopa's stomach side effects (take it with food), and the 100mg of caffeine in the Nootropics Depot capsule, which counts toward the FDA's 400mg a day from all sources.
If you take any prescription medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, show your clinician the label before starting any of these.

Bottom line
Build your own. The DIY Cognitive Stack costs $1.31/day with full dose control and the highest evidence base. If you need one-bottle convenience, Mind Lab Pro ($2.30/day) is the best pre-built, transparent dosing, three published trials. Skip anything hiding doses behind proprietary blends, in nootropics, the dose is everything.
